Ballroom Dance – Synonymous to Elegant Dancing
Ballroom dance has its origin from the Latin word ‘ball’ which means ‘to dance’. Earlier, this dance form was a privilege of the creme de la creme of the society and was performed amidst grand celebrations like social banquets, competitions and auspicious occasions. This form of dance has to be performed by a couple in a beautiful closed hold position. This dance embraces a history that goes back to the renaissance era which brought to knowledge the different forms of dances, one of which was the well known dance form cinq-pace as referred by Shakespeare himself for this dance is made of five steps.
Later on, in the 17th century this form of dancing was performed by King Louis XIV, which was known as the Minuet and originated from a peasant dance in Poitou. Even today, Minuet is a very popular technique of dancing and prevalent in many countries across the world. King Louis XIV also established an academy to promote this dance form, specifically the rule of five positions of feet. This era even witnessed the integration of ballet dancing with this dance & was practiced since then, till the end of the Victorian era.
Accompanying the Victorian era was a contemporary form of ballroom dancing that is popularly known as Waltz even today. England was the land where this form of pure music became very well known. It was this same period when numerous other ballroom dance kinds came into existence. This dance forms include the Mazurka, Schottische and Polka. As the 20th Century begun, Jazz and the Jive rocked the dance floors.
It also saw a reformation in the dance forms like waltz etc. This reformation was done to allow the couples to move independently. Salsa is the most popular style of dance, which has captured the hearts of the masses and the classes all over the world.
The other ballroom dance forms which are all over the places are the Tango, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Swing and the Viennese. The international Latin dances include the Samba, the ChaChaCha, the Jive, Passo Doble etc. In the year 1924, ballroom dancing was in full swing and various different competitions started off. A Branch was also formed by the Imperial society of Dance Teachers. This initiative was implemented with the sole objective of standardizing the techniques of dancing.
There are a variety of ballroom dance forms, and every form has its own beauty, charm, technique, style and distinctiveness. At the same time, these forms even have special rhythms, tempos and techniques with similar qualities. Some of the night club dances like the Nightclub Two Step, West Coast Swing, Lindy Hop, and Merengue are also placed in the ballroom category at times. In Brazil, Forro, Lambada, Pagoda etc are the most loved dance forms.
The attire for this dance type is usually a bow tie and tailcoats for males, while full gowns for females. This day the tail suit trend has been replace by shorter tuxedos, vests and other fashioned outfits for men. The Latin dances have different attire, as in women wear the short-skirted Latin apparels while men go for tight fitting trousers and shirts for the clarity and finesse of the body and leg movements.
At present, ballroom is not just a form of dance but is a way of life for numerous couples across the globe.

Learn to Dance – 5 Insider Tips to Learn to Dance Salsa Uniquely
The one thing I really like about salsa is that there are so many different ways to dance it and no one way is necessarily any better or worse than another. Where the goal of learning ballroom dances is often to achieve a certain ideal form of body movement and expression of the music, salsa celebrates and thrives with its many different forms of expressions with a goal often to find and create your own personal unique form of expression. Learn to dance salsa uniquely. Here is how.
Insider Tip # 1 To Creating Your Own Style – Understanding Your Dance Background
The first step to creating your own salsa style is to understand your dance background. For example, do you have background in other dances? If you do, don’t try to inhibit your body from bringing those dance expressions in to salsa also. Rather integrate them to it.
Salsa dancers probably have some of the most varied dance (and non-dance) backgrounds there are. Some salsa dancers come from ballroom, others come with ballet, jazz, or tap background, some come from the hip-hop and breakdance world, while yet others come from dances like west-coast swing or hustle.
And then there are dancers like myself that come from no dance background at all. But don’t let a lack of dance background be a excuse for developing your own style. Some of the most sought after salsa dancers in the world come from no dance backgrounds at all. Often there is nothing cooler than seeing ordinary guys (and gals) with no dance background dancing with passion.
Insider Tip # 2 To Creating Your Own Style – Understanding Your Personality
Let your salsa dancing reflect your personality. Are you more eccentric, funky, introverted, dramatic, sexy, classy, crazy, funny, sophisticated, or a combination of many things.
Don’t be afraid to bring your personality through. Rather build your dance style around it. If you are funky and more eccentric person, you might want to go take a contemporary dance class rather than a ballroom dance class to augment your salsa dancing.
Let your own unique personality build your dancing and your dancing to be an expression of it. Learn to dance and shine your personality through it!
Insider Tip # 3 To Creating Your Own Style – Understanding Your Body
The truth is that certain moves will look better than others on you depending on your body type. Finding out what moves and movements feels good and most natural to your body type takes time. Injuries and other limitations may also make it more sense to emphasis certain movements in your dancing versus others.
Observe the dancers your resonate the most with and emulate them. Pick their moves, style, personality, and flair and incorporate it to your own. As you learn from great dancers and become a better dancer with time you begin to develop your own unique self expression on the dance floor.
Insider Tip # 4 To Creating Your Own Style – Your Clothing Style
As you get more and more into expressing yourself in the dance floor, let your clothing style augment it as well. If you like hip-hop style salsa, let it show with your cap and some baggier pants, for example. Dance is about expression and your clothing is part of that expression.
If you want to feel sexy, who says you should not wear a little shorter skirt, other than maybe your Grandma, of course. What is so beautiful about salsa dancing is that individual expression, rather than being inhibited, is being celebrated on the dance floor. Live to dance and dance to live someone famous once said.
Insider Tip # 5 To Creating Your Own Style – Respecting The Styles Of Others
What will really make you stand out is when you not only have created your own unique dance style and expression, but when you also respect and honor the styles and expressions of others. There is no one better or worse style than another. We are all different and our differences should be respected, honored, celebrated, and understood. Just because someone is different from us does not mean that they are not just as equal and should be valued the same.
Sure, some have been able to create unique art and style that is valued more than other in terms of its monetary value, but in the eyes of God we are all equal. So make sure to appreciate and find something good in all expressions of this great art form.
And there you have it 5 insider tips to learn to dance salsa uniquely by creating your own personal style.

How to Plan a Barn Dance
Barn dances have become very popular for all kinds of events from wedding receptions through to corporate events, birthday parties and village fetes – even prom nights!. I believe their popularity is due to the fact that people of all ages enjoy these events equally. Here is my guide to planning and running a successful event.
The Venue
Barn dances rarely take place in barns, so there is no overpowering need to go and find a friendly farmer and get him to lend you his barn. In fact barns can make very poor venues (unless specifically prepared or designed for such events) as there are often no amenities such as toilets etc. They can also have a tenancy to get a little cold and they can be quite dusty when the dancers start to kick up the dust from the floor unless the barn has been meticulously swept and cleaned beforehand. It is sometimes better to pick a venue such as a village hall, school hall or a large hotel. If the barn dance is for a wedding then a room in the hotel where the wedding reception is being held is usually the norm. The band will also need room to set up their equipment. Ask them how much equipment they have and how much room they will need. You wouldn’t be able to get say a five piece band with a drum-kit onto a stage that is only designed for a duo. Always make sure that there is ample room for the dancers to dance. A barn dance will need a bigger dance floor than a disco. Ask the venue how large the dancing area is.
Choosing a band
Most barn dance bands have a website these days where you can hear snippets of their music or see videos of their live performances. Choose your band to suit the occasion and the likely taste of your guests. Remember that a barn dance band also has to be listened to as well as danced to.
Barn dance bands come in an array of different forms from the traditional accordion, guitar and fiddle arrangement to the more rock and roll type electric barn dance bands. Most bands will sing a song between the dances so that there is always some entertainment throughout the dance. The more rock and roll end of the bands will usually have a few rock and roll numbers for the end of the night and be able to “mix things up” a little to suit everyone.
When choosing a band it is true to say that you get what you pay for. Do not choose on cost alone. It may be better to pay more than you expected to get an evening that everyone remembers for all the right reasons and not the wrong ones. Nearly all barn dance bands come complete with a caller, but always remember to ask if this is the case. Make sure your bands equipment is PAT tested and the band has Public Liability Insurance. This is becoming obligatory in many venues and all barn dance bands should carry such insurance.
Catering
Most dances have some form of food for the guests. It can be a simple buffet, a hotpot or even a hog-roast at a larger event. The food break is usually planned to be about halfway in the proceedings. So if the dance started at 8pm then the buffet would start to be served around 9.30pm. Some venues insist you use their own caterers. Check on this beforehand.
You will also need a bar at your event. There are exceptions such as church socials etc where this is deemed inappropriate. Ask if the venue has a bar or whether you will have to bring one in to cover your event.
What happens during a barn dance?
The band will arrive in ample time to set up their equipment for the barn dance and do a preliminary sound check to make sure all is well. Although the dance may have been designated to commence at a certain time a band cannot perform if not enough people are there on time. This is something that always needs to be taken into consideration.
Before the evenings entertainment commences, the Caller will contact the organiser to do a final check on the start time, and the timing of any breaks etc. It is usual for the band to perform two separate period with a break in the middle.
During the dance your guests will be requiring a few rests between the dances. Most bands entertain with songs between the dance numbers to ensure that there are never any awkward silences. During the interval, between their first time of performance and the next, the band usually provides background music on their sound system. If not, then the venue can usually provide this for you.
If a buffet or hot food is to be served during the night, the interval is usually the best time for the refreshments. This is also often the time organisers to make any speeches or give any gifts or prizes.
Make sure your bands equipment is PAT tested and the band has Public Liability Insurance. This is becoming obligatory in many venues and all barn dance bands should carry such insurance.
When the performance commences, the Caller will invite the guests on to the dance floor and will “walk through” all the barn dance moves before the actual dance begins. Following commencement of the dance, the Caller will continue to call out the moves throughout the dance (so no one needs to have a good memory). And remember, mistakes only add to the fun and jollity!
Barn dances can be great fun for all ages. Enjoy planning your event!

How to Find a Dance Partner
Many people have the desire to learn to dance but then stop themselves because they do not have a partner. Others wish to attend dances for a social activity and then decide otherwise because they claim there are not enough dance partners. Here are five ways you can make yourself a more popular dancer and attract one or more dance partners.
- Attend group classes. Group classes are the best way to find a partner. You will be able to personally meet many people and then see them on a regular basis. People who take group classes often attend weekly social dances and this will be another opportunity to see the people that you already know and practice with them. Group dance classes are also a way for you to increase your dancing skills. When you become a better dancer you are more apt to attract a partner and you will become more confident in approaching others to ask them for a dance.
- Take private lessons. Private lessons will make you an accomplished dancer in a shorter amount of time than group lessons. When you are skilled at dancing your chances of getting asked to dance or of asking others to dance will greatly increase. In addition, your dance instructor may be able to pair you up with another student as a partner.
- Attend dance conventions. Dance conventions are usually three to seven day events at a given location. These events will have workshops, showcases, competitions and social dances. They usually focus on one style of dance such as salsa, swing or ballroom. This is a great opportunity to meet other dancers and improve your dancing skills.
- Improve your dancing skills by yourself. Practice your dancing as much as you can. There is much you can do to increase your skill without a partner. For example, practice your lessons by marking the steps at home. Listen to the music that you are dancing to and become an expert on the rhythm and timing of the music. Anything you do to make yourself more valuable as a dance partner will help you attract another one.
- Attend as many dances as you can. Show others that you are serious by being seen often at social dance events. Get comfortable asking others to dance as well as feeling open to being asked to dance by others. Women should feel just as comfortable asking men to dance instead of waiting for the traditional invitation from the man. Be open to dancing with people of all levels. Let go of negative thoughts that focus on the lack of good dancers or the lack of men available at the dance.
The key to finding a dance partner is becoming the best dancer you can and then being seen often at social events. If your intentions are focused enough and you stay positive about your desire there is no doubt that you will find one or more dance partners.

Are You Sitting on the Dance Floor Sidelines?
Dancers’ do you find yourself sitting on the sidelines watching others dance? If so, there is only one sure fire way to resolve this problem. Get up, walk over to another dancer and ask them to dance. Chances are that they will lead you directly to the dance floor.
In a dance community, asking someone to dance does not imply that you are interested in starting a relationship with that person. It simply means: “I would like to dance”. There are many couples that go social dancing or attend dance conventions together and rarely even dance with each other. Couples, we dancers all thank you for sharing your significant others. We understand that “A Dance is just A Dance.”
When I first started dancing I was HORRIBLE. I did not have a clue how to dance but, I was determined to learn. I would show up at my local social dances 3-5 nights a week and literally BEG the guys to dance with me. I was unaware that dance classes were even available, so I was at the mercy of anyone that would help me.
During that time, my 3 year old grandson was visiting for 3 weeks. One night he fell asleep watching Shrek, if any of you have kids and have watched the movie you will know exactly what I am about to say. At the end of the movie the little donkey jumps up, over and over saying: “Pick Me, Pick Me”, I was too tired to get up out of bed and shut it off, so all night long I heard, “Pick Me, Pick Me”!!! The next night at dance, my hand flew up in the air and the words just came out of my mouth: “Pick Me, Pick Me!!!”" From that day forward, I never sat on the sidelines again! As a matter of fact, as I eventually learned to dance, all it took was one “Pick Me” a night and I rarely left the dance floor. You see, once you get yourself out there on the dance floor, chances are that you will find your next dance while still there. So dancers, feel free to use my mantra and ask them to “Pick You.” Do not be afraid to ask someone to dance and if you must turn someone down, do it politely. There are legitimate reasons for saying no.
Positioning is also very important. Do not hide in the corner or sit at the back of the room. Stand near the dance floor and look like you WANT to dance. Watch where the dancers are entering and exiting the floor and remember that they are there to dance, just like you. I know that it is often difficult to ask a dancer that is more experienced than yourself, but if you truly want to become a better dancer, you’re going to have to be brave and do it! In retrospect, if you are a more experienced dancer, try to “remember when” and occasionally ask a lower level dancer to dance. Let’s all dance together and build a strong healthy dance community.
